Key takeaways
- Frizz is hair absorbing moisture from humid air and swelling unevenly.
- Sealing the cuticle — with conditioner, a leave-in and a light oil — is the key.
- Heavy products weigh hair down in heat; go light and targeted.
- Protect hair from sun and heat tools as well as humidity.
Step outside in Bangkok and you can almost feel your hair change. Smooth in the air-conditioned bathroom, frizzy by the end of the soi. It's one of the most common hair complaints we hear at the stall — from people with straight, wavy and curly hair alike.
Why humidity causes frizz
Hair is slightly porous. When the air is full of water, hair absorbs moisture and swells — but not evenly. Strands that are drier or more damaged absorb more, so they bend and lift away from the rest. That's frizz. Hair that's been coloured, bleached, heat-styled or sun-dried is more porous, so it frizzes more.
The goal is to keep hair well conditioned and to seal the cuticle so it doesn't drink in moisture from the air.
The anti-frizz wash-day routine
- 1
Shampoo the scalp only
Massage a balancing shampoo into the scalp and let the suds rinse through the lengths. Scrubbing the ends roughs up the cuticle.
- 2
Condition every time
Mid-lengths to ends, left on for a couple of minutes. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water.
- 3
Treat weekly
Swap conditioner for a repair mask once a week — especially if your hair is coloured.
- 4
Blot, don't rub
Squeeze water out with a soft towel or old T-shirt. Rubbing creates frizz before you've even started.
- 5
Leave-in on damp hair
Mist a leave-in through damp hair and comb through with a wide-tooth comb.
- 6
Seal with oil
Two or three drops of a light hair oil warmed between your palms and smoothed over the ends.

Drying and styling
- Point the dryer down. Aim the nozzle down the hair shaft from root to tip to flatten the cuticle.
- Finish with cool air. A blast of cool air helps set the style.
- Use heat protection. Always, before blow-drying or straightening.
- Air-drying? Apply your leave-in and oil, then leave it alone — touching while it dries causes frizz.
By hair type
| Hair type | What helps most |
|---|---|
| Fine, straight | Lightweight mists and a single drop of oil; avoid heavy creams that make hair limp. |
| Thick, straight | Richer conditioners and a few drops of oil through the lengths. |
| Wavy | Leave-in plus a light cream or gel, scrunched in; don't brush when dry. |
| Curly / coily | Richer masks, less frequent shampoo, leave-in cream and oil to seal. |
| Coloured or bleached | Weekly repair treatments, heat protection, UV-protecting mists. |
Don't forget the sun and the pool
Strong sun dries hair and fades colour; chlorine and sea water do the same. Wear a hat, use a leave-in with UV filters on beach days, and rinse hair with clean water after swimming. Thai herbal hair care with butterfly pea makes a lovely gentle option for regular washing.

Quick fixes during the day
- Smooth a tiny drop of oil or hand cream over flyaways.
- A claw clip or low bun on the hottest days.
- A silk or satin scrunchie instead of tight elastic.
