Makeup

Makeup built for real weather: cushions that sit well on skin that's been out in the sun, tints that survive street food, and brow and lash products that hold through a Bangkok afternoon.

Our approach

Makeup, chosen for Bangkok

Heat and humidity are the enemies of makeup. Foundation slides, mascara smudges into panda eyes, and powder turns cakey by the afternoon. The answer isn't more product — it's lighter layers of the right formulas.

That's why our makeup edit leans Korean and Japanese: thin, skin-like cushions and tints, long-wear lip stains that fade evenly instead of patchily, and tubing mascaras that don't run in the heat. Thai makeup brings tropical-friendly colour and multi-use sticks that live happily in a pocket.

Before you buy base, read our cushion foundation guide and our tips for makeup that lasts in humidity.

    Cushion foundations

Cushions are a Korean invention: liquid foundation soaked into a sponge inside a compact. They give a fresh, skin-like finish and make midday touch-ups easy — and many include sun protection.

    How to use

Press — don't swipe — the puff onto the centre of the face and blend outwards. Build a second layer only where you need it.

    What to look for

    • Matte or semi-matte finishes for oily skin
    • Glow finishes for dry skin
    • Refill packs to save money
    • Everyday
    • Sun protection

    Skin tints & BB creams

When full foundation feels like too much in the heat, a tint evens out redness and gives a healthy finish without a 'made-up' look.

    How to use

Apply with fingers after sunscreen, blending quickly. Spot-conceal over the top.

    What to look for

    • Light, fluid textures
    • Shades with the right undertone
    • Formulas that dry down rather than stay tacky

    Lip tints & velvet lips

Tints stain the lips so the colour stays through a bowl of noodles and fades evenly rather than leaving a ring. Velvet formulas give a soft, blurred look that photographs beautifully.

    How to use

Dab onto the centre of the lips and blot outward with a fingertip for a gradient, or line the whole lip for a full look.

    What to look for

    • Water tints for a natural stain
    • Velvet tints for soft-matte
    • Shades that double as blush

    Setting powders & sprays

A whisper of fine powder on the T-zone controls shine without looking dry. Setting sprays melt layers together so base lasts longer in humidity.

    How to use

Powder with a puff or brush only where you get shiny. Mist a spray at arm's length after makeup and let it dry.

    What to look for

    • Finely milled, translucent powders
    • Oil-absorbing for the T-zone
    • Sprays with a fine, even mist
    • Oil control

    Brow pencils & gels

Japanese brow pencils are famous for ultra-fine tips that draw hair-like strokes. Tinted gels keep brows in place all day, even when you're sweating.

    How to use

Draw light, upward strokes where brows are sparse, then brush through with gel.

    What to look for

    • Slim retractable pencils
    • Shades a little lighter than your hair
    • Waterproof or smudge-proof formulas

    Mascaras & liners

Japanese mascaras are designed for straight, fine lashes that struggle to hold a curl — and for humid summers. Tubing formulas don't smudge but remove easily with warm water.

    How to use

Curl lashes first, then wiggle the wand from root to tip. Let each coat dry before adding another.

    What to look for

    • Tubing or film-type mascaras
    • Curl-holding formulas

    Blush & multi-use sticks

A single cream stick can give colour to cheeks, lids and lips — ideal for travelling light or for a quick touch-up between a day at the market and dinner.

    How to use

Tap onto the apples of the cheeks and blend upward with fingertips. Use the same shade on lids for a matching look.

    What to look for

    • Creamy, blendable textures
    • Shades that suit your undertone

How to choose makeup that survives Bangkok

A few principles we share at the stall every weekend.
An open cushion compact with its puff

Thin layers beat full coverage

The more product on your face, the more there is to slide. A cushion or skin tint gives an even, fresh look and can be built up only where you need it — around the nose, on a blemish, under the eyes.

Prep matters as much as the base itself: a light moisturiser and a sunscreen that's had five minutes to settle will make any foundation last longer.

Match your shade in daylight — and think ahead

Swatch along the jawline, not the back of the hand, and check it in natural light. Many visitors tan during a trip to Thailand, so if you're here for a few weeks, consider a shade that matches your neck and chest rather than your face.

Asian beauty brands often name shades by number with undertone letters — for example, N for neutral, C for cool, W for warm. We can explain the system for whatever's on the shelf.

Choose formulas that are designed for heat

Tubing mascaras wrap each lash in tiny polymer tubes that don't smudge with sweat but slide off with warm water. Lip tints stain rather than sit on top, so they fade naturally. Setting sprays and fine powders used only on the T-zone control shine without looking flat.
