Key takeaways
- Apply from thinnest to thickest texture.
- Sunscreen is always the last skincare step in the morning.
- Strong actives (retinoids, acids) usually go at night, on different nights.
- Wait a moment between layers if things start to pill.
If you've bought a few new products and aren't sure what goes on first, you're not alone. Getting the order right helps each product work as intended and stops things pilling or sliding off — something that matters more in Bangkok's humidity than in cooler climates.
The simple rule
Thinnest to thickest. Watery products first, then serums, then creams, then oils. Lighter layers absorb more easily when they go on first; richer layers seal everything in. The one exception that matters: sunscreen is always the last skincare step in the morning, so nothing dilutes or disturbs it.

Morning order
- 1
Cleanser
Gentle — or just water.
- 2
Toner
Hydrating, pressed in.
- 3
Essence (optional)
A light, watery layer of hydration.
- 4
Serum
Vitamin C or niacinamide work well in the morning.
- 5
Eye cream (optional)
Tap gently around the eyes.
- 6
Moisturiser
A gel-cream for most skin in Bangkok.
- 7
Sunscreen
Last skincare step. Then makeup, if you wear it.
Night order
- 1
Oil or balm cleanser
Melts sunscreen and makeup.
- 2
Water-based cleanser
A gentle second cleanse. See how to double cleanse.
- 3
Exfoliant (some nights)
AHA or BHA toner two or three nights a week.
- 4
Toner / essence
Hydration.
- 5
Serum or treatment
Retinoid, niacinamide or a calming serum.
- 6
Eye cream (optional)
Tap gently around the eye area.
- 7
Moisturiser
Slightly richer than in the morning if you like.
- 8
Face oil (optional)
A few drops pressed on top, if your skin is dry.
Where do these go?
| Product | Where in the order | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet mask | After toner, before serum | Pat in the leftover essence |
| Spot treatment | After serum, before moisturiser | Or a patch on top of everything |
| Pimple patch | On clean, dry skin | Before moisturiser around it |
| Facial mist | Any time — then seal it | Follow with moisturiser |
| Sleeping mask | Last step at night | Instead of or over moisturiser |
| SPF moisturiser | Last step in the morning | Use enough — or add a sunscreen |
Actives that shouldn't share a night
Strong exfoliating acids and retinoids can irritate when used together, especially when you're starting out. Alternate them: retinoid one night, acid another, a 'rest' night with just hydration in between. Niacinamide, centella and hyaluronic acid play well with almost everything.
Do I need to wait between steps?
For most products, just until the previous layer has mostly absorbed — usually under a minute. Wait a little longer (a few minutes) after sunscreen before makeup, so it sets and your base doesn't slide.
You don't need every step
This is the full menu, not a checklist. Most people in Bangkok do well with cleanser, toner, one serum, moisturiser and sunscreen. If you're just starting out, read your first skincare routine — three steps, done properly.
