Key takeaways
- In humidity, lighter textures used consistently beat rich products used occasionally.
- Oily skin can still be dehydrated — air-con is usually to blame.
- Morning is about protection (sunscreen); evening is about removing the day (double cleansing).
- Add one active at a time and give it four to eight weeks.
The most common question we hear at the stall is some version of this: “My skin is oily by lunchtime but tight after I wash it — what am I doing wrong?” Usually, nothing dramatic. It's just that most skincare advice is written for cold, dry cities, and Bangkok is the opposite.
Here the air outside is hot and heavy for most of the year, the air inside is cold and dry, and the sun is strong whether or not it looks sunny. Heavy layering usually makes things worse. A short routine with the right textures, done consistently, does far more than ten steps done occasionally.
What Bangkok's climate does to your skin
Three things happen at once. First, heat and humidity make oil and sweat more noticeable — sebum flows more easily when it's warm, so shine shows up faster. Second, air-conditioning quietly pulls water out of the skin for hours at a time, which is why skin can feel oily on the surface and tight underneath. Third, UV stays high all year, so sun protection isn't seasonal here.
A good Bangkok routine answers all three: it cleans without stripping, hydrates without weight, and protects every single morning.

Morning: cleanse, hydrate, protect
- 1
Cleanse gently (or just rinse)
A low-pH gel or foam cleanser if you're oily; plain lukewarm water is fine if your skin is dry or sensitive. If your skin feels squeaky afterwards, the cleanser is too strong.
- 2
Add water back
Press a watery toner or essence into your skin with your palms. This is the quickest way to hydrate without adding weight — ideal before a day in air-con.
- 3
One treatment serum (optional)
Pick it for your main concern: niacinamide for shine and pores, centella for redness, vitamin C for dullness.
- 4
A light moisturiser
A gel-cream that sinks in within a minute. If you're very oily, a hydrating serum plus sunscreen may be enough in the morning.
- 5
Sunscreen — generously
SPF 50 and PA+++ or PA++++, about two finger-lengths for face and neck. This is the step that matters most. Read our sunscreen guide to find a texture you'll enjoy.
Evening: remove the day
By evening your skin is wearing sunscreen, sweat, oil and city pollution. That's why we recommend double cleansing at night — it sounds fussy, but it's simply the most reliable way to get sunscreen off without scrubbing.
- 1
Oil or balm cleanser
Massage onto dry skin for 30–60 seconds, add water to emulsify, rinse.
- 2
Gentle second cleanser
Your low-pH foam or gel from the morning.
- 3
Toner or essence
Two thin layers if your skin feels tight from air-con.
- 4
One targeted serum
Brightening, calming or blemish care — not all three on the same night.
- 5
Moisturiser
The same gel-cream, or something slightly richer if you're dry.

Adjusting for your skin type
| Skin type | Cleanser | Moisturiser | Sunscreen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oily | Gel or foam, BHA a few times a week | Light gel, or none in the AM | Gel or fluid, matte finish |
| Combination | Gentle foam | Gel-cream; richer on dry patches | Fluid or milk |
| Dry / dehydrated | Cream or milk cleanser | Gel-cream plus ceramides | Moisturising milk or cream |
| Sensitive | Water in the AM, gentle balm at night | Fragrance-free, ceramides | Mineral or fragrance-free |
| Acne-prone | Gentle foam or BHA cleanser | Non-comedogenic gel | Oil-free, lightweight |
If you're not sure which you are, see our guides to oily skin, dehydrated skin and sensitive skin, or just message us a description of what your skin does by mid-afternoon.
What you can safely skip
- Heavy night creams — unless you're genuinely dry, a gel-cream does the job.
- Multiple serums at once — they compete for space and make irritation harder to trace.
- Gritty scrubs — chemical exfoliants used a couple of times a week are gentler.
- Alcohol-heavy toners — the tight, matte feeling is temporary and often comes back shinier.
- Eye cream (sometimes) — your regular moisturiser usually works around the eyes too.
Small habits that make a big difference
- Blot, don't re-powder, when you get shiny during the day.
- Keep a mist or toner at your desk for air-con dryness.
- Change your pillowcase often and wash makeup puffs weekly — warm, humid air is kind to bacteria.
- Rinse sweat off with water after exercise rather than cleansing a third time.
- Reapply sunscreen if you're heading outdoors in the afternoon — a stick or cushion makes it easy over makeup.
Keep it short, then adjust
Give any new routine two to four weeks before judging it, and introduce one new product at a time so you know what's working. If something stings persistently or causes breakouts, stop using it. Skin in this climate rewards patience more than novelty.
“The best routine is the one you'll still be doing in a month.”
